Zwischen den Jahren wird Altona mit A0-Plakaten zum Thema Ikea gepflastert werden - siehe Bild. Außerdem verteilen wir Leporello-Flyer zum Thema im gesamten Bezirk (s. Anhang). Die Logistik steht, aber wir brauchen noch ein paar Leute, um das an einem Tag zu schaffen. Also: Mobilisiert, ruft eure Pappenheimer an, nehmte Freunde und Nachbarn mit!

Oracle Shopping tour

Interesting - Oracle seems to be on a little shopping tour.

Just after they confirmed to buy Sun just two weeks ago, last week they also announced to buy VirtualIron.

There are definitely many areas of expertise and interesting products they get from Sun. With VirtualIron they also acquire one of the pioneers of commercial product technology for data centers based on the Xen hypervisor. Sounds very interesting.

I admit, I did not look too deep into Oracle VM as of yet. It's based on Oracle Linux (a respin of RHEL), which was, when it's first versions came out, not really well reported about.

But it seems, one cannot ignore Oracle as a big player in the IT Infrastructure sector anymore now.
Not to think about they basically "own" Java now - how great it is to know that Java made it to become Open Source just before this deal - I think I would not be very happy to hear my preferred Language be owned by a company basically known to be very classic commercial software developer.

Xen.org community survey

I found that there is even a survey for the Xen community to make "your voice heard".

So did I. I have not much hope that things will change in general, but at least I tried.

The most important question, and my answer to it is this one:

"What one feature would you like added/changed to the Xen.org Community to make it better?"

Xen.org core members, especially Citrix and the original XenSource people should care much more about "normal" community.There's an impression by many people, that only interests of large players are of interest.

The existence of proprietary tools seems to hinder the development of proper openSource code.

Bugs reported by "normal" people are merely ignored by core developers, the build systems is bad, and so new developers have a hard time to get in.

Code quality and documentation of the python tools and scripts (/etc/xen/**)is bad.

The fact, that Citrix seems to be unwilling to sponsor a proper development team to achieve well-running mainstream kernel integration and development of current Kernels for Linux dom0 will kill Xen for KVM sooner or later.

As said, I have not much hope for things to change. The OpenSource community already converted in large amounts to KVM, and will continue.

Sure, KVM needs to mature some bit more, and might not be ideal for some usage scenarios (I/O heavy stuff, for example), and Xen has proven to be very secure. But there are many smart developers working on it, and there is a much clearer, and more open OpenSource development model.

Anyway, I would like to see a change in Xen happen - I just have no sign that such thing will happen.

Hallo, Ihr süßen kleinen überall rumschwirrenden geflügelten Erden-Mitbewohner.

Ich hoffe, Ihr lest dieses Blog ab und zu, denn ich habe eine kleine Nachricht an Euch:

Die Welt ist GROß!

Genau genommen, die Welt ist riesig. Sie ist so groß, dass eine allumfassende Vorstellung von Ihr weder in Eure kleinen Vogelhirne, noch in mein, im Vergleich mit den meisten Eurer Artgenossen um ein vielfaches größeres, Superhirn hineinpasst.

Und Ihr, Ihr seid ja auch wirklich liebe Viecher. Ihr tut im Großen und Ganzen keinem was zuleide. Fliegt mal hierhin, mal dorthin - zwitschert ein bisschen rum, was meist sehr freundlich klingt, man denkt bei Euch an Natur, Freiheit, ein schönes Leben.

Aber warum, Himmel Arsch und Zwirn, müsst Ihr neuerdings, trotz dieser verkackt riesig großen Welt, in der es so viele hässliche Ecken gibt, in denen Ihr Euren stinkenden Kot abladen könntet, ohne dass es groß auffallen würde, IMMER WIEDER auf meinen Fahrradgriff SCHEIßEN???

Lasst es einfach bleiben. Danke.

Ach, wie herrlich.

Eine super Idee hatten da die Organisatoren des Hamburger Hafengeburtstages 2009!

Weil die Schweiz das diesjährige Gastland ist, werden nicht nur Käse, Feinmechanik, Messer, Berge und Steuerschlupflöcher präsentiert. Nein, das würde nicht reichen, um ein eindrucksvolles Bild der Partner zu bekommen.

Die ansonsten militärisch sehr zurückhaltenden und politisch neutralen Schweizer können auch anders: Die können nämlich auch mit Kampfjets in der Gegend rumfliegen!

Und weil das in Zeiten von Kriegsführung mit (einfachen und schmutzigen)Atombomben und Informations-Kriegsführung über das Internet ja nicht mehr so viel Sinn macht, hat man sich gedacht: "karren wir die Vögel mal an den Hamburger Hafen, und lassen sie ein paar Runden rumfliegen - zum Amüsement der Besucher, und der Bevölkerung."

Zumindest letztere ist tatsächlich und wirklich unglaublich amüsiert! Wie schön es sich Arbeiten lässt, wenn man sich fragen muss, ob die Russen gerade gemerkt haben, dass sie Ihre alten Atombomben am besten loswerden, indem Sie sie mal schnell nach Hamburg fliegen und da abwerfen - oder sonst was passiert sein könnte.

Mich hat erfreulicherweise die Twitter-Suche nach "Hamburg" relativ schnell erleuchtet. Und Ruckzuck fanden sich da auch jede Menge wenig erfreute stimmen. Im Prinzip keine einzige positive Meldung - was natürlich daran liegen kann, dass die Begeisterten in dieser Zeit mit aufgerissenen Mäulern am Fenster, auf dem Dach oder der Straße standen, vor Freude erstarrt.

Ich habe mich prompt bei den Organisatoren des Festes beschwert - die Verantwortung für das Programm, so sagte mir Frau Imke Michaelis, trage aber die Behörde für Kultur, Sport und Medien. Es hätte mich nicht gewundert, wenn deren Vorsitzende auch noch ein Mitglied der GAL Fraktion wäre, die sich, weil man ebven Kompromisse eingehen muss, wenn man mitregieren will, selbst so für einen Quatsch nicht zu schade wäre - ist es aber zu meiner leicht positiven Überraschung nicht. Beschwerden für diese schlaue Idee nimmt wohl das Büro von Frau Senatorin Prof. Dr. Karin von Welck(parteilos) entgegen.
Ein bisschen seltsam, dass sie parteilos ist, aber trotzdem die einzige, die auf der CDU-Seite ein eigenes Bild und umfangreiches Profil bekommt, nicht wahr?

Genug für heute - eine letzte Bitte: Wenn in einem der Flieger noch Platz ist, würde ich gerne mal mitfliegen - ich bin ja auch ein bisschen Technik-Begeistert - und wenn das Teil schon über Hamburg zerschellt will ich doch wenigstens noch einmal Action haben dabei...

Noch ein interessantes Learning über den Microblogging-Kosmos dabei:
Während in der Zeit der Überflüge Twitter ganz gut gefüllt war mit Meldungen über die Entrüstung dieser Aufrüstungs-Präsentation, kann man jetzt, eine Stunde danach, diesen Stream gar nicht mehr so leicht wiederfinden.
Eben reichte die Suche nach "Hafengeburtstag" und "Hamburg" um den Bildschirm mit wenig erfreuten Meldungen über das Spektakel zu füllen. Das nächste mal mache ich einen Screenshot.

Nachtrag:

Das Ganze erinnert mich natürlich sofort an den schönen und toll organisierten Flugtag zu Ramstein im Jahre 1988. Ein Klassenkamerad von mir war dabei, ihm ist aber fast nichts passiert. Trotzdem sollte doch so ein Ereignis genügen, um in Deutschland, wo aller möglicher Mist verboten wird, man, um seine Steuererklärung selbst zu machen, nicht einen Bierdeckel braucht, sondern einen LKW voller Papier auswendig lernen muss, so einen Unfug fern jeden Nutzens im Umkreis von 50 Kilometern jedweden menschlichen Lebens zu verbieten.

Mir ist gerade zu Ohren gekommen: Tatsächlich kam noch so ein Schlaumeier auf die Idee, zum 20 Jährigen "Jubiläum" des Ereignisses in Ramstein einen neuen Flugtag zu organisieren - sogar die Beteiligten dazu einladen wollte dieser Mensch. Was für eine Geschmacklosigkeit.

Und noch ein weiterer Verbesserungsvorschlag zu Ihrem System.

Ich habe heute auf eine meiner Bewerbungen eine Anfrage/Rückfrage erhalten.

Als ich die Liste der Nachrichten gesehen habe, bin ich zunächst erschrocken, weil ich dachte Nachrichten übersehen und nicht beantwortet zu haben.

Nochmal Nachschauen zeigte mir aber: In dem Nachrichten-System sind gelesene Nachrichten nicht von ungelesenen zu unterscheiden - nur beantwortete Nachrichten sind besonders markiert.

Außerdem fehlt mir auch hier ein direkter Link zu der Ausschreibung, auf die sich die Nachricht bezieht.
Ich muss dazu immer viele Schritte machen:

* neues Fenster mit Projektwerk
* Projekt-ID in der Suche eingeben
* nochmal auf das Projekt klicken.

Das könnte man mit einem einzigen Link einfacher machen, dann kann man diesen mit einer einzigen Aktion in einem neuen Fenster öffnen.

Hallo,
Ihr anspruchsvollster (noch-)Kunde hat mal wieder eine Verbesserungs-Idee:

Immer wenn ich eine Bewerbung auf eine Ausschreibung am, bearbeiten bin, kommt schnell nochmal der Wunsch, mir die Ausschreibung noch einmal anzuschauen, dass ich passgenauer darauf eingehen kann.

Nur leider gibt es in projektwerk dann keinen schnellen und einfachen Weg mehr dorthin, außer dem "back" Button - womit dann auch meine Bewerbung wieder weg ist.

Leicht zu realisierende Abhilfe:
In der Überschrift über dem Textfeld, in dem man die Bewerbung schreibt, steht der Titel des Projektes. Dieser könnte doch einfach ein Hyperlink sein, der die Projektbeschreibung in einem neuen Fenster öffnet.
Oder auf der Bearbeitungsseite könnte gleich der Angebots-Text auch nochmal drauf stehen - so lang sind die Texte ja meist nicht.

Ich blogge das auch gleich nochmal, da ich auf diesem Weg scheinbar immer direktes Feedback von Ihrer Chefin bekomme :)

Mal ein kleinerer, aber dafür umso lustigerer Patzer der Bahn.

Ein seltsames Verständnis des Begriffes "online" hat man dort - auf der Seite zur Bahncard100:

"Die Mobility BahnCard 100 für Einmalzahler können Sie online gegenwärtig nur auf dem Postweg bestellen"

Online und Postweg passt nach meiner Auffassung der Begriffe eigentlich nicht so gut in ein und denselben Satz :)

Überraschungen Im Zug

Rückweg vom schönen FAI Workshop im Büro 2.0 in Berlin!

Der Zug in Berlin fährt erst mit einer halben Stunde Verspätung los.
Begründung: "Fehlendes Personal"!. Entschuldigung: keine.
Hmm, die Bahn wird jedes Jahr teurer, nicht selten mit der Begründung,dass die Personalkosten steigen. Meine wiederholten Fragen an Schaffner und Schalter-Angestellte, ob diese in der letzten Zeit mal eine Gehaltserhöhung bekommen haben, werden immer verneint.
Mehr Personal scheinen sie auch nicht einzustellen, sonst wären sie in der Lage, zeitnahh für Ersatz zu sorgen, wenn ein Mitarbeiter, der für den Betrieb des ICE unverzichtbar ist, ausfällt.
Wohin gehen diese Personalkosten also?
Ach ja, ganz vergessen, mein Freund Mehdorn braucht ja jeden Monat einen neuen Ferrari - wie komme ich dazu, seine Grundbedürfnisse in Frage zu stellen, wo er doch so viel tolles leistet.

Aber ich schweife ab.
Im Zug plötzlich: die Überraschung! Die Bahn brauch ja nun bei jeder ICE Fahrt eine
halbe Stunde länger, weil die ganze Strecke Berlin Hamburg überarbeitet werden
muss.
Sicher eine halbe Katastrophe für die Leute, die das jeden Tag machen müssen!
das ist eine Stunde mehr Aufwand pro Tag. Für wie lange, da muss ich mich wohl
mal wieder informieren.

Jedenfalls, was ist die Überraschung? Ja nun, die Bahn ist ja nun alles andere als bekannt für besondere Kundenfreundlichkeit, das ist ja nun mal so. Aber, was passiert?

Kurz nach dem Hauptbahnhof laufen in paar Bahnangestellte mit so einem
Nahrungsmittelcontainer durch den Gang, ähnlich dem Ding, was man von
Flugreisen kennt.

Ich denke, na, die werden da nun Essen verkaufen. Aber nein! Das Unfassbare geschieht! Eine Käse-Schinken-Laugenstange (natürlich sehr praktisch für die steigende Anzahl an Leuten die vegetarisch leben und sich komplett fleischfrei ernähren wollen - behaupten, mitgedacht
zu haben kann mein bester Freund Mehdorn mal wieder nicht) - und ein Getränk,
KOSTENLOS. Und später nochmal eine kleine Packung mit zwei Pralinen.

Ich muss es nochmal wiederholen: das KOSTET NICHTS! Die Bahn schenkt das den
Gästen um den Schmerz der langen Fahrtzeit zu mildern!
Kann mich mal jemand zwicken? Da stimmt doch was nicht, oder?

Nach einer Weile überlegen meine Theorie:
Ich habe irgendwas verlauten hören, die Baustelle hat was mit einer großen
Fehl-Lieferung von Bahnschwellen zu tun, die nun alle wieder ausgetauscht werden müssen. Man kann also folgern, die Kosten für diese Geschenke werden keineswegs von der Bahn gezahlt, sondern von dem Lieferanten, der den Schaden verursacht hat.

Ganz ehrlich, es dürfte dem Anwalt des Lieferanten ein leichtes zu sein,
wenigsten diesen Teil der Entschädigung nicht zu zahlen - die Bahn jedenfalls
würde sich, wenn diese Verzögerung, selbst wenn sie es komplett durch
Eigendummheit selbst verschuldet hätte, nicht dazu herablassen, so eine
Nettigkeit zu begehen. Genau genommen würde sie sich noch nicht einmal
entschuldigen.

Genug gemackert für heute - aber manche Dinge müssen einfach mal raus ;)
Geil, wie fahren wohl gerade am Maschener Güterbahnhof vorbei - die tausenden
Lichter sind sehr beeindruckend bei Nacht!

Wow, so viele Top Projekte

Es ist unfassbar. Einfach genial! Der IT Projetkmarkt nimmt wieder voll Fahrt auf. Ganz tolle Sachen gibt es da.

Im heutigen Projektletter von Projektwerk stehen gleich 3 Projekte mit Titeln wie "Top-Projekt", "Hammerprojekt", "Super spannendes Projekt" im Titel.

Für mich Zeitverschwendung, das überhaupt zu lesen. Wenn anbieter es nötig haben, ihr Projekt derart anzubieten, riecht das für mich schon beim lesen des Titels.
Ich gehe bei solchen Sachen von der Annahme aus, dass ein Vermittler versucht, jede Menge versteckte Probleme, unterirdische Bezahlung und Missmanagement hinter Superlativen und Ausrufezeichen zu verstecken... Und meist kriegen die Vermittler dann noch nicht einmal hin, die angeblich notwendigen Technologien, die man beherrschen soll, fehlerfrei aufzuschreiben.

Wenn jemand andere Erfahrungen gemacht hat, und ich hier total schiefliege, let me know :)

Bad GPL License

Found an interesting discussion about how bad GPL is for people who chose BSD as their license of choice - they cannot use GPL'ed libs in their programs and distribute it a s whole.

Really, I'm not a license expert - I still have "read the full gnu gpl license" on my todo list.

But this post is bad.
Basically, the guy doesn't write about the problems for _me_ when I license _my_ software as GPL, as the title suggests, but tells us that _he_ has problems because _others_ license GPL.

This post should be called "Are you sure you want to use BSD License" - because then you can't get the best readline license...

I'm not at all against BSD/MIT etc. in general. Everybody can chose as he wants.

But it's a feature, not a problem, that some large company can't make it's own fork of a linux system, sell it as it's own OS, without giving anything back.

I like that style software-communism.

Those who don't, have to live with the fact that you don't get the supercool readline from the communists, who seem to be better coders, at least in this area ;)

Oh, but I forgot, a really good argument from a man I totally respect... Steve Ballmer! Really, if he says GPL is wrong, there must be some truth in it. HAHA

Hamburger Anti Graffiti Kampagne

Interessanten Hinweis und kleine Diskussion zur aktuellen Hamburger Anti Graffiti Kampagne gefunden.

Mein Kommentar:

Die Frage ist nur, wie effektiv solche Kampagnen sind, wenn die Stadt parallell zu den Investitionen in dieses Marketing Jugendeinrichtungen streicht, die Dinge tun, mit denen sich Jugendliche alternativ beschäftigen können.

Das mit den 500 Millionen ist ja auch sone Sache

es ist ja auch so, dass es

1) nicht stimmt, denn die Summen, die von Bahn und Polizei angesetzt und angeklagt werden, in den meisten Fällen völlig überzogen sind, und weil es

2) natürlich gerade den Anreiz erhöht, diese Summe noch in die Höhe zu Treiben... und Gegen das, was uns durchgeknallte Banker kosten, ist das ja noch ein Klacks, da ist noch Aufhol-Potenzial :)

Insbesondere der Verein HipHopHamburg (http://hiphophamburg.de), der speziell in diesem Bereich viel getan hat, musste im Rahmen der Sparmaßnahmen des Senates komplett die Segel streichen.
Dabei werden dessen Papiere von mehreren Behörden, teilweise ohne um Erlaubnis zu bitten, sogar für genau diese ziemlich nutzlosen Kampagnen kopiert.

Markus lobt die Stadt, dass sie ja legale Flächen zur Verfügung stellt - wieviele legale Flächen stellt denn bitte Hamburg zur Verfügung?

Die kann man an einer Hand abzählen. Die meisten Wände haben sich einzelne selbst besorgt, und lassen da nur ihre Freunde ran. Gerade benachteiligte Kids, die sich nicht gut ausdrücken und damit nicht um so was kümmern können, also genau die, die sich mit Ihren, oft wirklich nicht ansehnlichen, Tags in der Stadt Geltung verschaffen, bleiben so weiterhin außen vor.

Wenn man sieht, dass es in den meisten Städten eine eigene SOKO für das Thema gibt, die die Jugendlichen wie Schwerverbrecher verfolgt (auch extrem teure Hubschrauber Einsätze wurden ja vor ein paar Jahren erprobt), die dann den Kids, die eh kein Geld haben, meist ungerechtfertige horrende Summen zur Last zu legen versuchen, ist das, was da passiert alles total hirnlos.

Grails with idea

IntelliJ idea has been promoted to me as a unbeatable great tool for grails development.

Admitting, it was nice to have working code completion and some refactoring support, I am still waiting to see the greatness in it's full effect becoming large enough to convince me for buying a piece of closed source software.

Some things I struggle(d) with:

* Font in the IDEA is clumsy, rough and pixelated in some areas (e.g. create new project's first dialog)

* ctrl-z does not do "undo", but "delete line below cursor!!! - This is a major problem

* No docs on how to get started with an existing grails project

* Because of the point before this one, I wanted to start a new project to see how it looks. It says "now sdk" and has a "new" button. it let's me browse in the filesystem, but wherever I go (usually to "GRAILS_HOME"), it never can be pressed.

And so, that is the point, where, after wondering for some more minutes how I could ever to develop a grails project with idea, I'm giving up.

Projektwerk - ich warte!

Gut, Projektwerk hat mir nach Androhung meiner Kündigung wegen Unzufriedenheit nun 3 Monate Premium Mitgliedschaft geschenkt.

Nur: Wenn sich an den Dingen, die ich bemängele so überhaupt nichts ändert, und das ist gerade mein Eindruck, dann wird das sowas von überhaupt nichts bringen...

Konkret warte ich nun seit Tagen auf folgende Dinge:

Der von mir nie bestellte Profilletter soll von denen abgestellt werden, nicht von mir

Eine gute Erklärung, wie und wieso es überhaupt zu dem 4500-Profil-Gau kommen konnte, kann man als gut zahlender Kunde auch erwarten, meine ich mal. Wenn die so sorgfältig mit meinen Daten umgehen, wie sie das System-Update behandeln, dann gute Nacht

Ich bekomme nicht alle Email-Benachrichtungen wie bestellt! Konkret habe ich noch nicht eine einzige Benachrichtigung für die Suche nach "Java" bekommen - und da ist jeden Tag was dabei. Das problem wurde am 7.2. gemeldet

Und natürlich meine anderen Wünsche bezüglich Suche und bezüglich Transparenz, ob die Anbieter, die ich sehe, nur Vermittler, oder direkte Kunden sind!

Argh, und beim Nachgucken, was noch fehlt, bin ich schon wieder auf die dumme Mail mit den 4500 Profilen von letzter Woche gekommen, die ich auch unaufgefordert bekommen habe - und mein Mailprogramm ist wieder eine Minute außer Gefecht.

Ich bin äußerst gespannt, wie das weitergeht, und ob ich mich tatsächlich nach der Cebit mit Christian Strasse treffen werde, um die von mir vorgeschlagenen Optimierungen zu besprechen.

Heute bleibe ich bei Koehntopp. und es lohnt sich: "Degradabale Ajax"

Na, mal ein paar Tage mit noscript surfen, und in dieser Hinsicht gehen einem echt die Augen auf... (oder: in Hinsicht auf das Einfühlen in stark sehbehindert: *zu*?!)
Was heute so alles nicht mehr geht, ohne JS, zeigt, was für Idioten allzu oft am Werk sind - siehe:

In beiden Fällen ist mir komplett schleierhaft, wo der Sinn der Sache steckt. Da gelten noch nicht einmal irgendwelche fadenscheinigen "muss halt supergut aussehen, animiert sein und pixelgenau, interaktiv..." Ausreden der Flash-Fraktion.

Oh, ganz schön in Rage geredet nun - naja, die beiden Beispiele wollte ich Euch nicht vorenthalten ;)

Herrlicher Eintrag von Herrn Koentopp.

Ich bin ja immer mal wieder ein bisschen neidisch auf diese hippen Typen mit den hübschen Apfelkisten.
Aber die Sache mit dem Service ist nicht ganz neu, gerät aber immer wieder in Vergessenheit.

Was mir nie in Vergessenheit gerät ist, wie einmal ein befreundeter Debian Entwickler auf der Debconf in Helsinki 3 Tage lang ein rotweißes Absperrband um seinen Tisch gewickelt hatte!

Warum?

Nun ja, sein Mac(na, wie hieß die günstige Variante damals nochmal, als sie noch nen G4 Power Processor hatten?) war ein Totalschaden. Er hatte sich einen neuen gekauft.
Natürlich wollte er an die Daten - und dazu musste er nun mal die Platten tauschen.

Und das bedeutete, ca. 50 (natürlich nur grob geschätzt - können auch 30 oder 90 gewesen sein - viele jedenfalls!!!) Schrauben aufzudrehen, mit Pinzetten zu hantieren, und und und - ein Wunder, dass es tatsächlich ohne Lötkolben ging :)

Neulich musste ich daran nämlich wieder denken. Und zwar, als ein Bekannter, der ein neueres Macbook hat, mich fragte, wie man eine größrere Platte einbauen könnte.
Nach kurzem Begutachten des Gerätebodens sagte ich ihm: "indem man einen neuen Rechner mit größerer Platte kauft"

Das ist gut, denn es kaufen noch viel zu viele, ohne groß drüber nachzudenken, bei Aldi, Lidl, Penny, Netto, Plus und Co. und was da abgeht, geht auf keine Kuhhaut.

Mal was positives: Verdi über Betriebsratsgründungen in Lidl Filialen.

Solange selbst die, die sich es anders leisten könnten, weiter immer nur noch billiger einkaufen willen, wird sich hier aber wohl nicht viel ändern... bis alle nur noch Jobs haben, die eben so sind, wie sie sind, wenn es nur gilt, mit aller Gewalt den Preis in den Keller zu treiben... aber wir hatten halt keine andere Wahl...

Wasser ist an manchen Orten schon eine ziemliche Mangelware.

Ich habe darüber schon öfters mal philosophiert, und boykottiere auch ziemlich bewusst Konzerne, die aus dem Wassermangel in armen Ländern Kapital zu schlagen versuchen - think of Danone, Nestle, CocaCola, und noch einige andere Riesen-Nahrungsmittel-Konzerne.

Ich hatte auch schon mal davon gehört, dass es ziemlich viel Wasser braucht, einen Laptop zu produzieren, aber dieser Tweet von Lars Hinrichs gestern ließ mich doch aufhorchen!

Ohne eine genauere Quelle außer "WWF" zu nennen, und den Tweet mit "#TED" zu hashen, nennt er die Zahlen 50000 Liter Wasser und 3sqf Regenwald - klingt ziemlich viel und hat mich ziemlich schockiert.
Nachgeschoben kommt noch ein Link zu einer WWF-Präsentation, die klarstellt, dass ein Kaffee Latte 200 Liter Wasser braucht.

#TED bezieht sich wohl auf die Tedprize Veranstalung - deren erste drei auserkorene Preisträger-Wünsche aber im Vergleich zu dem eklatanten Wasserproblem ziemlich banal klingen.

Und sogar die Bildzeitung springt schon auf den Zug und berichtet - argumentiert aber nur mit Geld - konkret wundersamen 20€ im Jahr, die man mit Wasser sparen sparen kann.
Im Gegensatz zur vielgelobten Abwrack- ähm, Umwelt-Prämie, von der Millionen nicht-Autofahrer mal grad garnix haben, und die wiederum den indirekten Wasserverbrauch fördert, ist das aber ziemlich zu vernachlässigen.

Aber zurück zum Thema. Brennende Fragen dazu sind:

Wie kann ich denn nun was tun?

Wieviel Wasser verbrauche ich denn wirklich?

Hilft es Entwickungsländern, wenn ich weniger Dusche?

Darf ich also viel duschen, sollte aber weniger Kaffee trinken?

Fragen, die ich hier "mal eben schnell" nicht beantworten kann, sicherlich.

Ein paar Gedanken und Vorsätze:

Weniger Laptop(s), generell weniger Elektronik kaufen. Tja, da muss ich eine Balance finden, zwischen dem, dass ich als IT Profi nun mal auch auf dem neusten Stand sein muss, und dem Sparen.
Oder ich hänge den Job an den Nagel und werde Schreiner - oder besser noch Beerensammler.
Nein, ist gar nicht so sarkastisch gemeint, wie es klingt. Kann man diesen Planeten retten, und gleichzeitig an dem teilnehmen, was heute so als zivilisiertes Leben wahrgenommen wird?
Jedenfalls, man braucht nicht alle 3 Monate ein neues Handy (naja, außer das Nokia N95 fällt nach einem jahr schon komplett auseinander...)

Tatsächlich weniger Kaffee-Zeugs trinken - alle zwei Tage den geliebten Latte reicht vielleicht auch, oder?

Sparsam Duschen. Ja, ich dusche gerne auch mal sehr sehr lange. Tut einfach gut. Muss aber wohl nicht sein. Es gab auch Zeiten, wo ich tatsächlich in einer Wohnung ohne Dusche gelebt habe, und zum Duschen zum Nachbarn musste. Da tat es auch eine Schüssel und ein Waschlappen. Jaja, da fragen sich nun einige, wie alt ich wohl bin - viele wie ich in den 70ern Geborenen können sich schon so was nicht vorstellen. Solche Wohnungen gibt es, auch heute noch, zum Beispiel im schönen St. Pauli, gleich hier um die Ecke. da wird auch noch mit Kohle geheizt - was ich übrigens grundsätzlich ganz angenehm finde ( Umweltaspekte kann ich nicht beurteilen, ich weiß bloß, dass es mit Holz ziemlich übel ist).

Generell Konsum vermeiden. Gut, das mache ich eigentlich schon im Großen und ganzen. Ich kaufe nicht alle paar Tage ein neues T-Shirt, weil es jetzt so ein tolles neues Motiv gibt, und nicht jeden Monat 'ne neue Jeans, wenn die alten noch O.K. sind. Meine Freundin kauft zwar heimlich ab und zu bei Plus, aber trotzdem kommt jeden Monat die Bio-Kiste (die ich jetzt auch nochmal ganz auf regionale Produkte, vielleicht auch von einem anderen Anbieter umstellen werde, weil der momentane mir schon zu sehr nach Massenabfertigung wirkt).

Tja, fängt man an, darüber nachzudenken, hat man genug zu tun für lange Zeit.
Ich bemühe mich einfach weiter - und versuche, Antworten auf die Fragen zu finden.
Vielleicht hilft Utopia dabei?

Die Bahn ist sooo lieb!

Und so schlau. Klar, Skandale erledigt man am besten, indem man die Leute, die darüber berichten, einfach mal abmahnt!

So muss es sein. So handelt ein Mehdorn, der die Interessen seiner Kunden, Angestellten und Chefs (wir alle!!! das darf man mal nicht vergessen - normalerweise werden Angestellte, die am Laufenden Band Mist bauen, auch irgendwann mal gefeuert - dieser hier ist irgendwie festgekettet an seinem Stuhl) wiederholt, ja regelmäßig ignoriert und mit Füßen Tritt.

Die Anwälte und PR-Leute, die Ihn beraten, sind Ihr Geld scheinbar auch nicht wert, sonst hätten sie sich denken können, was diese Aktion auslösen wird. Naja kann Ihnen ja auch egal sein - Ihr Geld bekommen sie trotzdem - und es wird richtig viel, wenn Markus Beckedahl es wirklich bis zum BVG durchboxen muss...

Wie laut muss ich "Buh" rufen, dass es bei Ihm ankommt?

Etwas kurzsichtiger Vorschlag als Kommentar im Blog "Die Bahn boykottieren" - außerdem total kontraproduktiv, und, wer weiß, vielleicht sogar das Kalkül der Leute, die diesen Typen an die Spitze des Unternehmens gesetzt haben? Naja, das geht nun schon in Richtung Verschwörungstheorie - aber bestreiten kann man nicht, dass es Leute gibt, die ein erhebliches Interesse daran haben, dass die Bahn immer teurer, unpünktlicher (wobei, das sehe ich nicht ganz so, aber viele hacken darauf rum) und unfreundlicher wird.

Das tolle Konjunkturpaket: Frau Merkel sagt "Wirtschaft und Umweltschutz - Umweltschutz und Wirtschaft" sind das Wichtigste.
Warum wird dann im Konjunkturpaket hauptsächlich das Auto und Autobahnen finanziert - Busse und Bahnen explizit ausgeklammert?

Aehm, und Kontraste meint, Youtube müsste Taliban Videos zensieren??? Geht's noch? Natürlich habe ich was gegen radikale Islamisten, genauso wie gegen radikale sonstwas-Freaks. Aber mit Zensur muss man halt vorsichtig sein.

Atomforum: Deutschland darf sich nicht zurückziehen

Radiohören macht wütend! So gerade beim Deutschlandfunk.

Der Präsendent des Deutschen Atomforums labert gerade im Radio davon, "dass Energievernunft einkehrt" - und meint damit, dass es nicht sein kann, dass Deutschland ein Anti-Atom-Staat ist und bleibt.

Klar, Atomstrom muss man einfach haben.

Ist ja auch sicher. Deswegen gibt es ja auch kein Tschernobyl-AIDS , deswegen gibt es ja auch keinen Nachweis in einer vom Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz in Auftrag gegebenen Studie, dass es in der Umgebung von AKW's vermehrt Leukämie gibt.
Deswegen gab es auch nicht letztes Jahr in Schweden, Deutschland und Frankreich mehrere Unfälle, von denen keiner so richtig genau weiß, wie knapp man an was Schlimmerem vorbei gekommen ist.
Soweit ich weiß (natürlich nicht selbst gemessen habe) hilft Atomstrom noch nicht einmal, die CO2 Bilanz zu verbessern, da in der Herstellung der Brennstäbe eben doch jede Menge CO2 anfällt, und überhaupt jede Menge Atommüll.

Wir haben auch noch kein Endlager, und das vorläufige Ding, Asse, ist löchrig und brüchig wie ein vertrockneter Schweizer Käse.

Was haben solche Menschen im Kopf, die diese absolut dümmste und gefährlichste aller möglichen Varianten der Energiegewinnung propagieren? Kriegen die nirgendwo sonst nen Job außer in diesem Atomforum?

Seit es die Idee des Atomstroms in Deutschland gibt, gibt es massiven Widerstand - eine Demonstration von Leuten, die DAFÜR sind, gab es bisher noch nicht.
Was soll der Scheiß also?

Projektwerk: Neue Version - jetzt mit 10.000 Profilen ungefragt per Mail!

Nein, ich will ja nicht mehr immer rummeckern.
Aber was soll man tun, wenn einem immer solche genialen Vorlagen geliefert werden,
nun das dritte Mal in Folge aus der Richtung Projektwerk?!

Eben kommt der Projektwerk "Profilletter" in mein Postfach geflogen!
Eine Mail mit geschätzten 4500 Einträgen und Links zu Profilen.

Mal abgesehen davon, dass ich diesen Newsletter nicht bestellt habe:

Was meinen die wohl, wie sinnvoll es ist, eine Mail mit komplett ALLEN Ihren tausenden Profilen zu versenden?

Glauben die echt, das würde jemals irgendjemand lesen?

Das scheint laut Ankündigung eins der neuen Features der "Plattform" zu sein - die machen sich echt richtig Gedanken, was Ihre zahlenden Kunden am dringendsten brauchen!
Und Sie setzen die gut 40000 Euro im Monat die Sie mindestens einnehmen( wenn man die Profile zählt, und wohlwollend annimmt, jeder zahlende Kunde hat 4 unterschiedliche Profile, und die Projektanbieter komplett rauslässt) wirklich sehr sinnvoll ein!

Mich verärgert es jedenfalls nur, weil die Mail so unmögliche Ausmaße hat, dass das Öffnen sogar Thunderbird für 2 Minuten blockiert.

Mann oh Mann. Ich glaube, ich rauche einfach nicht genug Crack. Sonst würde ich das alles auch ganz normal finden.

Oh Mann, was für eine Selbstwahrnehmung hat Projektwerk!

"Social Media"??? Vernetzung???

Nach nun bald 3 Monaten Premium Mitgliedschaft(und womöglioch weiteren drei, weil ich wohl den Kündigungszeitpunkt verpasst habe, ich Depp) frage ich mich echt, wo denn der große Vernetzungswert bei Projektwerk liegt?!
Ich sehe bloß eine "ganz normale" Projektdatenbank - die einzige Kommunikations-Möglichkeit ist eine ganz simple Antwort-Funktion auf Ausschreibungen.

Und die Qualität dieser Ausschreibungen ist ziemlich fragwürdig.
Hier finden sich jede Menge Zweit- und Drittvermittler, Projekte, die man in vielen anderen Börsen auch wiederfindet (wo man dann nicht so viel für zahlt) - von direktem Kontakt zu Kunden kann nicht die Rede sein.
Und sozial? Also, ich habe es nun 3 Monate genutzt - da die Projektvermittler, die bei PW annoncieren offensichtlich ständig unter Zeitdruck stehen, erhält man auf die meisten Bewerbungen nicht den Pieps einer Antwort.

Also, die Freelancer-Arbeit der Zukunft sieht für mich anders aus. Hoffentlich.

Ach ja, und wenn man sich schon selbst (einen Monat vor-)feiert - müsste man doch wenisgtens einen Ausgeben, oder?

Ein Projekt, bei dem ich garantiert Spaß und Freude habe, suche ich schon sehr lange.
Mit der Programmiersprache Java habe ich zwar nicht im Studium, und auch nicht in Praktika, dafür um so mehr in Projekten Erfahrung gemacht.

Ich trete gerne locker und ungezwungen auf, technisch interessante Projekte sind genau mein Fall.

Gerne würde ich das Top motiviertem Team mit meiner treibenden Kraft ergänzen, und dabei meine kreative Ader gestalterisch einsetzen bei diesem Hammerprojekt!

Nein! Das ist ja eine ganz unverschämte Verleumdungs-Kampagne!

Da sorgt er doch vollkommen selbstlos dafür, dass die Preise für Bahnreisen jedes Jahr günstiger werden, dass die Bahn nicht nur pünktlicher, sondern auch freundlicher wird, und sich ganz besonders gut auch um ihre kleinen Fahrgäste kümmert - selbst wenn diese mal ihr Ticket vergessen haben.

Und jetzt sowas! Wie die Bild Zeitung berichtet, ist der neue Spitzelskandal bei der Bahn nichts weiter als Mobbing seitens der fiesen Gewerkschaften!

Hmm, Nico Lumma mein ja nun, nachdem er einige Vor- und Nachteile des G1, das er getestet hat:

"ja, das G1 Handy wirkt eher wie ein billiges Handy aus Asien. Was es ja auch ist…"

Ich hab' das Ding noch nicht in der Hand gehabt, es mag nach ja echt billig _wirken_ aber billig zu haben ist es ja wohl nicht.
Die Knebel-Verträge bei dem einzigen Anbieter, der es vertreibt, sind doch deutlich über den iPhone-Verträgen...
Dass soviele Leute sich von Google und Apple so ein Monopol als einzige Einkaufsquelle vorsetzen lassen und jubilierend den so massiv überteuerten Kram kaufen, ist ein Paradebeispiel menschlicher Intelligenz.

Ob tolles Aussehen das Wichtigste ist, das fragt man sich aber schon, wenn einem zum Beispiel mal ein Kumpel die Aufgabe gestellt hat, ohne Anleitung herauszufinden, wie man beim iPhone die SIM wechselt.
Der schöne Schein mag helfen, auf dem Schulhof die Mädels zu beeindrucken - Usability ist aber mehr als nur ein schön abgerundetes Gehäuse.

Das ganze Optik Gerede halte ich also für Unsinn. So ein Ding muss funktionieren und mir helfen, möglichst leicht zu kommunizieren (und was es sonst noch so kann). Dann, und nur dann, ist es auch sein Geld wert.
Klar, Usability ist auch eine Eigenschaft des Gehäuses und der Tastatur(Anbringung der Knöpfe und Anschlüsse, Ausmaße, ...). Aber die meisten iPhone und Mac Fredis reden immer nur von der "Optik".
Naja, es gibt ja auch Hirntote, die sich für die Stadt einen Geländewagen zulegen - unglaublich praktisch und notwendig.

Ich zumindest konnte nicht auf Anhieb mal eben schnell mit einem iPhone im Internet navigieren, und sowas fällt schon mal durch.

When the module is installed now, you can got to

and change wikipedia entries in the hiearchy of filter commands.

Drupal Menu Translation

I had a strange issue with drupal menu translation:

After adding a translation of a page, and set it to state "published", the english _and_ german_ page was shown in my primary links field - while I expected it to be shown only the one for my current language.

This can be solved by installing the i18n/internationalization module and enabling it and it's menu translation option. With the default it should be all good - if not, things cna be adjusted, for example in admin/settings/i18n.

Solution was hinted there: http://drupal.org/node/244752

I then had another issue: My Front page in the english version was switched to the default start page with hints how to get started.

That was, because I have not promoted the english pages to the frontpage.
I would usually want to have the maste node controll what is promoted (e.g.: if the german version is promoted, and there is an english version, it should also be automatically promoted?!)

Another strange issue is that the last Item on my frontpage now doesn't have the correct style anmymore. I'm going to post the the users mailing list and ask for a solution...

Drupal freelinking

About to add freelinking support to my new drupal system - it should enable me creating links to pages by writing wiki-style links.

Everything a bit confusing, the INSTALL file points to menu items that do not exist as written.

You really have to enable freelinking in the menu admin/settings/filters by going to the "configure" link of each content type that should have freelinking links.

After I did that, I get working links - but only when I'm logged in.

When not logged, the link exists, but clicking on it results only in a "access denied" message.

Can't see what's wrong there - for now, I'll check out the Markdown module to see if it offers me easy formatting, and the linking, too?!

Markdown module seems not to give me easy linking, but I found out how freelinking can be get going: Give the anonymous user the permission "freelinking module-> access freelinking list"

I just did somethign wrong when creating my own drupal theme by makin a subtheme of the zen theme from the STARTERKIT:

I copied the file layout-fixed as it is without changing it's name to layout.css - which seems to be what you have to do, and what the nice helper script does.

But I want to be able to change between the fixed and the liquid setting in the admin menu.
How can I do that?

I add this to theme-settings.php:

There's a nice script for automatically doing all necessary steps to get a subtheme of the drupal zen theme: http://drupal.org/node/336368

It has two small problems:

If you're a drupal newbie(and forgot a lot about the things you knew in php), you give a name with minusses (e.g. "zen-sub-theme-test"), you get something like


Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '-', expecting '(' in /var/www/cms/sites/all/themes/zen-sub-test/template.php on line 85

The other is, the script does not seem to set the human readable theme name correctly.

Drupal simple own design/theme

After playing a while with adapting the Acquia Marina theme to something I like quite good,
I want to learn to make my own theme from scratch with Drupal...

I'm checking out: http://drupal.org/node/313510 gives a nice and very easy introduction to build your own theme very fast.

The main change I added: I want my slogan and site title, adding some simple lines.

That's about it, with a little time I have my site exactly as it is today (the design needs a rework, and will get it soon) implemented and therefore editable with drupal.

I'll got ahead now, trying to make it even more "drupalish" now - as it's stil a bit ugly structured...

Further Drupal setup things

Some further things on setting up a drupal site:

First of all, install the journal plugin to track changes.

Here, I realize I am missing the module and theme upload modules that I had in my test site from the hosteurope APS install - they seem only to be contained in the Hosteurope stuff, and obviously made by a plesk developer, who did not write a licence (or any other single line of comment!!!) in his code.
So, I'm not gonna use them for now - anyway, the uploaders where incomplete - they should download stuff directly from the drupal site, not need a manual downlooad to the local disk!
And in general functionality as this seems to be considered dangerous anyway:

Modules are installed as explained here: http://drupal.org/node/70151 - in short, I have to put them into the directory sites/all/modules, which has to be created first.

Then I enable all my modules that I tested - namely

path

contact

aggregator

unfortunately, it's documentation does not tell about the usage:

Hmm, it's at admin/content/backup_migrate... but only allows to select database tables - so I have to know which ones to select...

After installing and enabling it on my master site, I can export a node's code in the node view.

And in admin/content/import I can import nodes. (hmm, the node's weight seems not to be imported...)

-> workflow -> Multilingual-support
->Enabled, with translation

Then, language setting are imported as wanted.

Still, menu name and menu weight configuration is not imported.

Bug in der Hosteurope KIS Dateiverwaltung

Bei der Dateiverwaltuing gibt es einen Bug:

Ich möchte die Gruppe einer Datei ändern, und markiere diese, wähle in der Spalte "Gruppe" "nobody" aus, dann drücke ich "ändern". Dann kommt dort die Meldung "Bitte Benutzer wählen".
Wenn ich den Benutzer auch explizit auswähle, geht es.

Das System suggeriert hier, man könne nur die eine Eigenschaft ändern, die auch geändert werden soll, es muss aber scheinbar auch der Benutzer gewählt werden - die voreingestellte Auswahl "nicht ändern" wird nicht berücksichtigt.

Vielleicht hilft es jemandem, der auch drüber stolpert :)

Drupal install from scratch on a managed hosting server

Installing on a managed hosting system means without ssh access, only ftp.
I have a Hosteurope Webpack L.

I read the INSTALL.txt file, but I have to do some extra/different things without shell access:

Upload the drupal files to my FTP server, plus the file sites/default/settings.php that contains my Database settings. (the DB already exists on my hosting setup).
Set the file permissions. (in KIS Administration > Webhosting > YOURCUSTOMERNUMBER > Allgemeines > Dateiverwaltung ...)

instead of "chmod o+w sites/default/settings.php" make this file owned by group "nobody", keep the owning user, and make the file writeable by the group (664)

instead of "chmod o+w sites/default" make the directory owned by the group "nobody" without changing the owning user, and make the file permissions to 775.

Now, the INSTALL.txt tells this:


4. RUN THE INSTALL SCRIPT

To run the install script point your browser to the base URL of your website
(e.g., http://www.example.com).

You will be guided through several screens to set up the database,
create tables, add the first user account and provide basic web
site settings.

But when I load the directory, without specifying the install.php script explicitly, I get a lot of errors:

It can be solved to directly call the install.php script!
The scripts works fine and leads to a running drupal.

Now, as the install script suggest, I set back the permissions (in the web based file manager, again):

./sites/default (755)
./sites/default/settings.php (644)

The only error I still have:


"Unable to send e-mail. Please contact the site admin,
if the problem persists."

This is a problem with the Hosteurope PHP mail setting, and a solution is documented here in German: http://faq.hosteurope.de/index.php?cpid=11073 - in short, if you don't want to rewrite your scripts, set a standard Email address in the KIS!

So far, I have a running Drupal instance now... more info on how I set up my site and other stuff later!

SilverStripe evaluation

After checking the drupal CMS and web Community system, I'm now checkin' out the SilverStripe CMS.

I'll need at least

an easy to setup and to maintain CMS
Blogging support
Translation support for pages and blog posts
Easy building of custom designs (not really checked for drupal yet)
a contact form
extensibility with custom code and functions as needed

Good to have:

wiki or markdown syntax for blog and pages
Automatically turn urls into links in pages and blog posts
all the other interesting features drupal has ;)

At the very start, I see SilverStripe comes with a nices web-based installer - no manual fiddling wherever... (I did not yet check that for drupal as I installed with the hosteurope web application service, but I'll need a custom installation)

And... HAHA: the name of the database I use is "something-test" - and all things I tested with it as for now worked well with it.

But silverstripe obviously does not like that. Actually, even the installer page automatically removes my lovely minus sign when I go out of the text field...
I have no database without a "-" in it's name, so I guess that was it for me and Silverstream for the next few weeks or so... what a bullshit!

I'm further checking out drupal to manage my little website on a small managed hosting server.
(Usually, I'm a java developer when it comes to programming, but I want a small and hassle-free web cms here on low cost hosting)

Apart from managing "normal" web content, Drupal seems, as expected, to have some interesting things for my website are delivered as core modules:

a poll system
a blog system

Hot ot get started with translation support is nicely described in http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/translation
It will be good to get started with a multi-lingual page, so I can put information about me in english and in german.

It seems also to have the same translation support for blog entries, which I like a lot, because I often have thought about translating some of my blog posts.

Some things I do not like as for now:

I get links to an english version with the language selector, even though there exists none.
in the content overview, the tranlastion is shown as an extra page
even though I have selected full html for my web content, a html comment is automatically escaped, and the comment signs are printed out as well as everything in between.
named/friendly urls are to be added with the path module (http://drupal.org/node/3665) - I'd like to have an option in the page content editor to do that, because it's about a nice URL for a "page", not about filtering whatever type of url (which might be interesting in advanced usage, clearly) - hmm, with further browsing - mabye it's this what I'm looking for: http://drupal.org/node/17345

Some things I'm missing (or still have to really search for, maybe I just didn't find them yet):

A preview mode to check the state of a page. (although, it seems in admin mode also the not-publishes pages are show).
I'd like to update the site with a single click - the core as well as all modules (hmm, there is an theme and module upload function, but only mfor stuff already downloaded to my local disk...)
how about deleting modules and themes?!
maybe for customer site usage, I have to check the editing permission and workflow stuff!

Some modules I did not test but want to have when going into production:

Google Analytics -> for the stats
Markdown filter / or better: wiki filter?! -> write pages and posts in markdown!
Printer, e-mail and PDF versions -> very nice!
CCK (Content Construction Kit) -> maybe interesting for more complex content types
Administration Menu -> promises nicer usage in admin mode
Wordpress Import to get my existing blog content over into the system

In the end, I got my little site setup in about 5 hours or so, and learned enough to get started adding a lot of interesting functionality in a breeze - a blog, contact form and more, all with transation into multiple languages are only a few steps away now!

I'm now going to give SilverStripe a chance to show it can do the same, but I'm already quite impressed of drupal's abilities.

changing Drupal's Home/Welcome/Start page

I'm currently playing around with Drupal a bit to get a simple but nicely configurable CMS for my managed hosting setup going.

It looks quite nice, can be setup with a single click as Hosteurope delivers it as a easy installable package (no nice security updates ans nothing, so for testing only! - but enough for checking it out before installing an up to date version).
And many things are quite intuitive.

Yet, one thing isn't: the setup of the start page!

After searching a while I found a hint here that helped me getting it done:

Change the value "Default front page" in the Admin menu at
Administer/Site Configuration/Site information/Default front page to the node youi created before and wish to use as your start page, for example, in my case, the field contains "node/1"

Die Konferenz ist vorbei, und war sehr nett - auch wenn ich wohl den Preis für das schlechteste Bowling Spiel am Social Event ernten werde. Was nicht heißt, dass ich keinen Muskelkater (aber nur einen moderaten) hatte.

Das Beschenken der Zuhörer mit Muffins und anderen Weihnachts-Naschereien kommt auf jeden Fall gut an :)

Ansonsten ist eine Resie nach Magdeburg zwar nicht so schlimm, wie ich es mir vorher vorgestellt habe, muss aber auch nicht immer sein.
An Vorträgen habe ich leider nur den IPv6 Vortrag von Jens Link mitbekommen - interessant, und langsam wird man sich wohl doch mal damit etwas mehr beschäftigen müssen als Admin.

Ich freue mich auf's nächste Jahr!

Kaufen bei Dell... mal wieder eine Katastrophe

Argh...

Der Dell Online Shop ist ja ziemlich cool und man kann die Teile gut konfigurieren (mir fehlt eindeutig die Option, auch das überflüssige Vista rauszukonfigurieren, und damit nochmal 20-80 Euro zu sparen, aber naja).

NUR: Sobald bei Dell etwas nicht ins normale Mster passt, oder wenn man was stornieren will, dann wird's immer wieder nervig.

Gerade mal wieder erlebt:
Ich will einen kleinen Desktop mit neuem AMD Prozessor, um ein paar Virtualisierungs-Sachen zu testen. Ich habe es eilig, aber letzte Woche noch hat Dell für dieseses System optimale Lieferfristen angezeigt. ( in einer Lieferfrist-Anzeige, die seltsamerweise heute nirgends mehr zu finden ist! Ich unterstelle mal, dass das kein Zufall ist, sondern eine Vermeidungs-Taktik, dass, Leute, die Ihre Sachen schnell haben wollen, nicht woanders bestellen weil derzeit die Dell Leiferzeiten wegen Weihnachtgeschäft doch stark verlängert sind - und finde es eine Unverschämtheit!)

Ich bestelle also, und weil Sie so nett sind, mir Zahlung auf Rechnung anzubieten, wähle ich das mal aus - genausogut hätte ich Kredikarte zahlen können, aber ich schaue mal, was geht.

Das war dumm von mir: Denn als Neugewerbe, der nocht nicht soviel da gekauft hat, darf ich gar nicht auf Rechnung kaufen.
Was passiert? Ich bekomme ein Mail, dass ich per Vorkasse zahlen soll!
Will ich nicht und wollte ich nie, und das schreibe ich der Person.

Ich schreibe nochmal, dass ich das so nicht will. Keine, nicht die allergeringste Reaktion.
Im Online-System steht meine Bestellung nicht, also kann ich auch da nichts stornieren. Am Telefon geht keiner ran - auch nicht innerhalb der normalen Zeiten am Samstag, bei den Privatanwendern, die im Gegensatz zu Business-Kunden auch Samstags bis 16 Uhr betreut werden. Von Gewerbetreibenden, die auch am Wochenende arbeiten müssen, haben die noch nix gehört.

Es hat nun genau bis heute Abend, 18 Uhr gedauert, bis ich eine Bestätigung der Stornierung hatte. Das sind, von Freitag Abend an, 3 Tage.
Wertvolle Zeit, in der ich schon am Samstag in einen lokalen Laden gegangen wäre, und am Wochenende in Ruhe meine Tests hätte machen können.
Genauso wie beim vorletzten Kauf, als Ihr mir einen Laptop verkauft hat, der zwar den richtigen Prozessor hatte, aber wo das BIOS die Hardware-Virtualisierung nicht unterstützt hat. Von der Stornierungs-Mail bis zur Bestätigung vergehen Tage - Zeit, die bei kritischen Sachen echt weh tut.

Facebook app development made braindead

Wow - I played around with for only two hours now, and already had half of the time fixing a problem occuring due to a stupid development system.

What happened? I build the very simplest app just like described in the tutorial. I gave it a name, and I named the according "canvas page" the same.
The name was mixed case - the tutorial said, I can use numbers, letters and underscores. I only used letters.

I did all the rest that was written. I called the canvas page.

I got "page not found error".
I went through everything again.

Nothing helped. Surely, for quite a while I was sure that I was making some stupid mistake, so I tried and tried. Also, as the developer app said "changes can take several minutes", I assumed, in a worsed case that can mean hours. So I waited.
Nothing changed.

I searched the web and found the solution.

Man. What are these guys thinking how much time people have? If they only get canvas pages working with lowercase names, why the hell dies the stupid form accept names in mixed case???

O.K., then thing can be fixed by creating the directory with

mkdir /etc/mysql/conf.d

But WTF - how do these guys test their quality?! I'm pretty sure I did not delete this directory - it's really a default install! And how can a security upgrade introduce funcationality to expect a directory, containing OPTIONAL config stuff, and otherwise make the whole daemon startt fail!

Ubuntu loses large trust points from me now! Imagine such a bullshit happens on a server...
So, my opinion about running Ubuntu on a server being quite dangerous is still correct!

Hyperlink URL's - advanced feature?

Hmm, I really wonder if an issue I have since a while with blogspot is really so advanced?!

I'd like to have a URL which I type in my blogposts automatically be rendered as a hyperlink so readers can click on it!

Currently I have to paste an URL from my browser bar or write it manually, select the text, copy the URL again to be sure, click on the add link button, paste the URL into the dialog box, and click save. In my opinion that's 5 steps too much!
In my opinion, it can be considered "normal" that anyone who writes an URL in a blog post also wants his readers to be able to just click and look at these URL's - only rarely sometimes I might be not willing to make people got there - e.g. when talking about a bad site and I don#t want to make advertising for them. But that's the exception.

I just looked at wordpress to see if they have this feature - no, they don't, but if you use wordpress install in your own webspace, you can install a plugin!
Hey, Wordpress even has a choice to convert :) into a smiley picture in it's writing settings - is that more important than an URL???

Open Source CRM for a one-person business...

Now that I start being self-employed, I have to take care of existing and potential customers, to get them to hire me (by the way, if you're reading this, you could consider it?! :) ).
Apart from the obvious thing that I'll have to convince people that I can help them solve their problems and do their business, that means I must manage contacts and the actions I do with them. CRM.

Sure I have a preference for a java based system, but it's not very clear what one could chose in that area. After some research, my possible candiates are:

Apache Ofbiz ofbiz.apache.org
lx-office www.lx-office.de
openerp openerp.com
sugarCRM http://www.sugarforge.org/projects/sugarcrm/
37signals Highrise - http://www.highrisehq.com/?source=37s+home

It's really hard to decide which way to go (as long as I think it's a decision for live and I#ll never be able to migrate to another system :) ) - some criteria and findings:

LX-Office and OpenERP are easily installed and have a financial module for calculation and registration of expenses and incomes, etc. - I'll need that at some point.

LX is developed and supported by a German company - meaning good support for Germany company legislation/laws and taxes.

In the CRM area, SugarCRM is the super-hero - at least I should test it. And, it has a soap interface, and so can be integrated into any other system later (for example in OpenERP, which claims to have a SugarCRM module, or in the liferay portal with the PHP runner).

Apache OFBiz is a powerful everything and the kitchen sink framework, but it doesn't look as it wil be easily installed in a simple bootstrap package - it seems to be more a framework than an application. No idea how much work it will be to get it running.

OpenERP and LX where tested in study of the German Government about Open SOurce ERP and both rated quite well.
The integrated contact management of OpenERP is not very intuitive (as in general I find the interface hard to get), but it has a Sugar plugin.

Conclusions:

Beginning with LX would mean to have financials and contacts in the same box - but the features of the contact management seem small and simple.
Starting with sugar, I could later try to integrate it with OpenERP, or anything else that can work with sugar's soap interface. Having no financial module should be no problem for the first months. I'm not expecting to have a lot to book.

Openoffice custom functions/macros

So, I "just" wanted to insert a date value into some openoffice spreadsheet, that should be derived from the documents name. I really thought, inserting a value derived from the current document's filename must be very easy.

I do a daily plan for the things I intend to do on a day, and name it "tagesplan_2008-11-22.ods".
And I want the name in this file not always be the date when I open/print the file, but the exact day it was intended for, and this is already coded into the filename.

I thought the should be easy, but it turned out to take about one and a half hour or so.
First I assumed that must be made with a macro and searched information about how to write these, maybe a simple howto or tutorial.
I didn't find an easy and clear introduction somehow.
Still, I found some examples of things similar to what I wanted to do:

And after a while, I had nearly what I wanted to do - (the example with setting a named field value still doesn't work, by the way) I needed to write a custom function.
Now, only some array stuff was missing. I tried to access the array in several ways. Even the documentation in the OpenOffice BASIC Wiki about arrays did only tell how to define empty arrays, but not how to insert values, and not how to access them!

I finally found it all out, and now I have a custom function that does what I want. And I added the Array acces etc. info into the wiki page!
In the macros for my file, I define:

I have the feeling it's quite hard to write macros/custom functions because it seem not to be well documented, and has an ugly syntax...
Maybe it's easier from the syntax when you do it with python or beanshell, but then again, the documentation issue might be even worse there (I definitely wanted to do my task that way, but found even less docs)

Geil - so langsam kann man auch als Linux-Nutzer einfach mal ein Stück aktuelle Musik im Netz online kaufen!
Ich war schon kurz davor, eine Strichliste zu machen, um zu berechnen, was der Industrie der digitalen Töne und Bilder so alles antgeht, weil sie es mir nicht ohne weiteres ermöglichten, eine Musik, die mich gerade interessiert, mal eben schnell zu kaufen... bei Filmen wird es wohl immer noch nötig sein, bei Musik wird's langsam besser und auch bei Hörbüchern - es gibt viele, aber einige Dinger sind noch immer nicht digital verfügbar - erst letzte Woche hätte ich wieder 10 Euro für Kismet ausgegeben, wenn es das gegeben hätte...

digital7.com ist auch nicht schlecht, alles ganz unkompliziert.
Kritisch: obwohl man ein Musikstück einfach per Klick, ohne weitere Bestätiguing der Kreditkarten-Nummer oder deren Sicherheitscode kaufen kann, verlangen die ein nur mindestens 4 Zeichen langes Passwort - ein bisschen knapp!
Und der download könnte ein bisschen schneller sein - naja, 200KB / ca. 5 Minuten für ein Album ist allemal akzeptabel! Bei 'nem Film von 1GB und mehr wär's mir aber zuwenig...

xplanner - is it alive???

So, I'm playing around with xplanner these days - actually using it to structure my work on my timetracking software which I need for the business I'm just about to start.

Xplanner is nice, but I have some serious doubts. It didn't see a release since more than two years, consequently (I guess it's because of this) it doesn't run on current java VM's. So, I really wonder if this project has a future. Strange enough, in the Subversion, there seem to be quite some commits - but why does a team that is constantly working on a software not decide to make some release at some point?

Netbeans for grails... haha

As I'm a bit annoyed of the complications that arise when using Eclipse for grails, I installed netbeans today.

But it fails to even let me set the grails home path in it's preferences.
Admittedly, at install time of the plugin, I had set a wrong environment variable to grails, from some time when I was only testing grails and did not yet install it as a deb package.
So after install, I had some path in there, where no grails install was found.

Still - I should be able to change it - and meanwhile I also, even corrected the GRAILS_HOME envoronment variable. But netbeans keeps the old, non-working path in it's configuration, and whatever I enter in the text field, after hitting return, it always tells me that this is no grails home.
Hmm, but grails works with this path - I enter exactly the same text that grails outputs when I run it perfectly working by hand...
The netbeans Grails plugin _might_ be better than eclipse - but it doesn't help if I cannot even get it running....

You still cannot easily play dvd's on free software Linux distributions... sadly...

But those guys describe it nicely how to do it with the medibuntu repository - only for Hardy. For Intrepid, the command must be slightly changed (and I prefer aptitude, as it also keeps a log of what it does)

Hmm, I always thought the big guys with the large labs and teams would already know that - but only today virtualization.info reports it as a big breakthrough: Migrating live from intel to AMD CPU's. We did that in a virtualization hacklab meeting quite some months ago, as I reported - with different CPU Bitnees, even - it's really funny to see this being reported as such a large breakthrough as of today.
By the way - we realized, it would only work in one direction, but not back again - the reports here don't even tell if they tried to go back again :)

Nice - Liferay makes it to be a keynote at the JAX conference...
Sadly, I will not be able to attend - too far, not enough time, and these conferences are interesting, but also not really cheap to get in.
My time is currently better invested in some real programming experience with (liferay) portlets - I'll hopefully get there in a while - as soon as the grails prototype for my timetracker and taskmanager apps are working in a 0.1 fashion :)

Surely, the connection to your name is only made easy as long as you are logged into a google account, but I guess many people are... and now see that combined with cookie reading and stuff on all sites using analytics or ad words...

So, even though I thought it will not really work well, I survived my Ubucon talk today :)

I couldn't finish my slides in a new presentation style ( I finally realized, my good old lates beamer style is jsut way too odd, and reading abpout the topic, I tried to get the FAI topic explained in a more Takahashi / Lessig Method style. But starting with that just yesterday afternoon, and also having an hour of Demo to prepare just didn't work out.

I'll try it for my next talk ( "State of open Source Virtualization Tools" at Heinlein SLAC conference) - promised!

Meanwhile, I'm still looking for a good tool to use for this. I'm not content with the handling of OO Impress - but the lessig/Takahashi style will not be possible to achieve with Beamer and a Text editor...

Things I might try:

Making the Beamer slides with Lyx
Looking at this(hmm, I cannot even view the demo slides in firefox, and in opera I see the first page, but not laoding anything more) - or S5 in general, but it seems background images are missing there - in general, this seems similar to using pandoc with S5
With a tool in java, I could enhance it my way - just it's not sure if it's a serious project
Checking out magicpoint again
I maybe should try to make apresentation on a mac once, using keynote
Multitalk also looks interesting - nice concept, interesting features - is stable and easy to use?

Surely, the tool I'm lookin for must be open source.
I'm not sure if I like it text-based or rather graphical. With text based tools, I dislike that it's not easily possible to position text and elements wysiwig, gui tools tend to do things that I don't want and cannot always influence.
I dislike Latex more and more, because it has ugly error reporting and checking - sometimes I need an hour just to find out _where_ an actual error is happening...
Text or GUI based - I want a possibility to add my own, totally internal comments for nobody to see, and I want to turn on and off optional slides depending on time, viewer, etc. In Impress it seems, I cannot have private comments (only the handout stuff), and even hiding slides only works for presenting in OOImpress, not for the pdf output.

Red Hat acquires Qumranet - the KVM developers

Bad News for Xen: Qumranet, Developers of the KVM Kernel Virtual Machine, are being bought by RedHat.

Even though Redhat claims to support the Xen version in RHEL5 until 2014 - it seems obvious that with such a step, they won't be putting too much energy in Xen-based solutions, and have much more trust in the KVM technology.

Having worked with Xen since 3.x version where useable, and having written a book about it, I'm not really surprised about this - it was way too long time that there wasn't an up to date Kernel ready to work in Xen dom0's - domU support was also lacking quite sme time.

So, when KVM came along - obviously so nicely written, that it was adopted into vanilla kernel in a rush - it was to be expected that Xen would probably not stay the only real open source virtualization tool to fight for market shares from VMWare.

It seems, an interesting race is going on - and with a major adoption of KVM on Redhat Systems, Xen seems to lose quite some ground...

Presentation tools and formats, google docs and forms

Today, my search for a good presentation toolkit(on the way t prepare my talk about FAI at ubucon) let me stumble around thinks like Pandoc, S5, and miroformats.org
And let me finally discover the Opengoo project - which looks very promising - apart from being written in PHP, which I somehow dislike, even though being my first programming language and admittedly powerful and simple - I just saw too much crap code written in it.

It claims to be a gerat online/web desktop - similar to the thing the exo platform wants to offer as WebOS. and the thing that might be available one day as Liferay Social Office.
Anyway, opengoo is nice, It even has a quite nice presentation editor for creating S5 Slideshow in the browser - using Slimey. Admittedly, it has some quirks, at least in the only demo. Similar to eyeOS, another impressive web desktop solution - sadly, presentation creation and spreadsheat also don't work in the demo currently.

Which finally made me look at Google Docs again - they are closely followed by the others, but still, they do interesting stuff.

Looks a bit stupid with the not too enlighntened type of questions I wrote down, right.
But what is it? A web questionnaire builder that directly stores the data you enter into a spreadsheat I created with my own options. I can look at an edit the results as in a normal spreadsheat, apply macros to them, and whatever - and there is even a report view showing some nice graphics of the data. Quite impressive job.
So, in the end, google seems to be still best in these systems, but there are good choices for people willing to own their data themselves, and they are getting better...

As of me - I'm still searching for a presentation tool that fits all my needs:

Being graphical in creation and output
While giving me full control over all the layout where necessary
I want internal comments for my own notes only
Have a good usability and being easy to learn
Be able to easily exclude pages not needed for a specific conference or course
Very cool would be to have it in a format that is suited for presentation and textual docs as well

There are a bunch of tools out there, and each of them fulfills some of my points - but I didn't see one that fits them all. Any ideas?

If you have a Todo() class with a toString() method like this:

Getting into Grails

I started to port my little Todo-Manager application that helped get my things sorted from rails to grails.

As I realized I don't like ruby as much as Java, and Groovy/Grails brings me very similar functionality, I want to base all my small management apps on Grails - when a useable toto manager is done, a timetracker, contacs management and calendar will defintely follow, and hopefully be integrated into a liferay portal at some point in time.

What I can say about grails already: even though I do Java for many years now, and already used comparable frameworks, groovy/grails is a new style of working and new things are there to learn. What I like is that the developer and user community are professional developers from the Java field - people who know what software architecture means - not like in the rails community(when I've been looking at it about 2 years ago, at least), where web designers just starting to program met - and the resulting architectures and code quality, as well a the style of questions on mailing lists was according to that.

I'm already playing with my own partial templates and my own taglib elements these days - you can expect some small howto's here as soon as I got my stuff solved and find time to write down my experiences.

IT Didaktik für Dozenten

Komme gerade von einem hervorragenden Kurs! "It-Didaktik für Dozenten", wo ich auf freundliche Einladung von Heinlein Support teilnehmen durftte!
Es kommt, wenn man IT Schulungen oder Vorträge macht, ja doch auf etwas mehr als nur korrekes vortragen der technischen Inhalte an. Es muss auch so präsentiert und gelehrt werden, dass bei den Zuhörern und Schülern auch möglichst viel hängenbleibt.
Eine gute Portion der dazughörigen Theorie, und eine Menge dabei hilfreicher Methoden hat uns der sehr kompetente und freundliche Christian Niemczik bei diesem Kurs gezeigt und üben lassen. Alle Teilnehmer waren begeistert! Eine Sache, die man jedem Dozenten nur wärmstens empfehlen kann - auch fortgeschrittene und erfahrene Leute lernen hier einiges dazu.

Liferay European Symposium - a great meeting!

I've been participating in the Europen Symposium for the Liferay Portal Server software.
A very nicely developped, feature-rich Java Portlet container.

And, without any doubt, Liferay is not only - at my very first glances, after writing only one very simple hello world portlet - a fine working portal solution, it also has proven, that it has a great community of users and developers.
I have a good feeling to base my own PIM management systems on liferay, as well as, when I learned more about liferay, offer services and use it for customer projects.

why does the phone to refuse doing an update of the phone software when there's no sim card in?
What if I have to be reachable and need to use the sim in another phone?

Apart from being totally broken, and not usable anymore, after only 9 months (my usual turnaround time for mobile phones gets near to the two years, if not even longer) - now I can't even delete my private data with a phone software update(I didn't find another way, there's no "delete all user's data" button) without inserting a SIM.

Gaaa - HTML 4.01 strict hassles...

So, I made my new site and made a html validity check.

Some minor errors, easily resolved, but then: I'm also not a too great friend of opening links in new windows.
But sometimes, I believe, it can be confusing users, especially less experienced ones, if the click on a link and are thrown out of the page they were just surfing on.
So, it might sometimes be quite reasonable, to open a link in a new window.

With oldstyle HTML, this was easily possible, using the "target" attribute.

But now, we're in the great days of html 4.X, that doesn't work anymore (see explained here, and in any html validator check for a page using it)

Obviously, I have three choices now:

Don't use this functionality, and probably confuse my users/readers
Rebuild the functionality with some lines of JavaScript/JQuery, etc. (sounds quite ugly, doesn't it? And it is also likely to break stuff for people who like to open their windows intentionally with middle mouse button?!)
Write, just for this sake, Transitional HTML

I like none of these ideas, really. And don't discuss with me, now, how bad the idea of opening a new window is, anyway. I'd like to be able to do it if I see it fits.

My second groovy script

While I'm still hacking around on the first one (besides some other small projects I started with Grails), which is about getting rid of doublettes in my ical calendars I have, I wrote a little script to generate my (haha, currently only single paged) webpage from a contents file and a general template - more or less just for fun, on the other hand, even with a single page it's nice to have the contents, the css and the general page frame differed.

My script looks like this:

It's run as "groovy ", and requires a file template.html to exist, which has a variable $BODY there, where the body should appear, and will write the file index.html(which, attention, will be deleted if existing!).

There's sure a lot to improve - but maybe in the meantime I will also decide for a real CMS - I don't want to reinvent the wheel (on the other hand, sometimes it's interesting as well as easier to make a custom solution).
I plan to have the content html generated from wiki input, as I'm too lazy to write HTML for such simple things as lists, headlines, etc. Let's see how it will go - I'll have to checkout java wiki engines to get that going - or is there some already in groovy, even?

Finally, a decent web design

After fiddling around with CSS tonight - the times when I was more active in web frontend development, this wasn't that current and nicely working - I have done a redesign of my website, for my upcoming self-employment works.
The old knowledge-base wiki just didn't fit anymore - especially for getting customers convinced they can get from me what they expect - high quality and reliable IT solutions in a range of topics like J2EE, virtualization, infrastructure-management (automatic installation, change-management, monitoring).

The contents are just simple, and minimal, but it will evolve - I just couldn't stand the idea to got to a conference (Liferay Conference next week) and have a crappy website to show off on the URL printed on my business cards.

The old knowledgebase-wiki is still available at http://www.sprang.de/wiki/ and the rest of ancient content, too.

Hint for cryptsetup and encrypted USB sticks

After a while of wondering, why I couldn't access my encrypted usb stick, I found a simple solution:


modprobe cryptoloop
modprobe dm_crypt

I thought, nowadays, all such things work nearly automatically - even gnome asks me when inserting the stick for the password - but it fails twice - for one thing, it doesn't work unless the packages cryptsetup is installed (UBuntu/Debian) - and I really wonder why it asks me for a passwword if the command it wants to use it with isn't even available - the second are these modules.

Without them, I got(now, not in gnome, on the command line):

Vorgestern noch gelobt, bzw. für ein technisches Detail in Schutz genommen, heute ärgere ich mich schon wieder grün und blau: Seit 36 Stunden warte ich auf Antwort auf zwei Mails, die ich der DB geschrieben habe - eine davon geht um nicht geringeres als das rechtzeitige Umtauschen einer Karte im Wert von 100 Euro, was sicher, wenn der Tag der Gültigkeit(SA) erstmal gekommen ist, nicht mehr, oder nur noch mit hohen Gebühren gehen wird... Naja, is ja auch nicht leicht, sone Mail.

Und es wird sicher noch besser, wenn sie erstmal privatisiert ist - ein Unternehmen in der freien Wirtschaft ohne Konkurrenz, auch Monopol genannt, das wird lustig.

An der Technik mangelt es nicht - am Projekt DELFI http://www.delfi.de/ wird seit mehr als 10 Jahren gearbeitet - ich habe selbst mitgemacht - theoretisch können dort alle Anbieter auch Ihre Preise hinterlegen - in der Praxis ist es eher ein Bürokratiemonster...

More France... and a nice german-style lunch

Yes, diving with the dive centre "Ile d'or" in Dromant near St. Raphel at France's Cote d'azur is nice.
Even though, it doesn't exactly help me to perfect my french to stay with a diving centre owned and run by mostly germans, it feels quite nice to understand everything perfectly the people are telling you - though, under water there's usually not much talk anyway :)

Apart from that, I'm practicing and optimising my french, which is, when talking still quite broken as many times I miss the right words - I have to learn quite a bit of vacabulary.

Today, I'll prepare a lunch in the style of my mother's kitchen for Rene and Mado - a simple dish, but traditional, and not the easiet one to get done. The hard thing with "Mehlknödel" is to get the dough in exactly the right consistence, make the water boiling exactly right (not too much bubbling, but hot enough for the dough to rinse immediately when entering the water), and put the dough into the water exactly the right way - all this decides if you get nice pieces, about the size of half a palm, or if the dough explodes into many small pieces. It will still be eatable and tasty, anyway, but making it right is my goal :)

I'm too lazy to translate now, so I deliberately publish the text of my mother's recipe here, for those who want to try:

Mehlknödel mit Speck-Rahm-Soße
(2 - 3 Pers. oder evtl. Rest in der Pfanne braten)

3 Eier
150 g Mehl
1 kl. Tasse Milch (oder Wasser; *mit Sprudel werden die Knödel zart)
1 Pr. Salz

zusammen verrühren, der Teig soll nicht zu dünn sein – evtl. etwas Mehl dazu –
dann etwas stehen lassen, damit das Mehl sich bindet.

Ein Topf mit Salzwasser zum Kochen bringen, mit einem Eßlöffel kleine Mengen in das heiße Wasser tun – sieden lassen, bis die Knödel oben schwimmen, dann abschöpfen –
vorher mit nur einem oder zwei Eßlöffel Teig probieren, ob die Masse hält.
wenn die Knödel auseinanderfallen, noch etwas Mehl dazu.

Dörrfleisch in kleine Würfel schneiden und in der Pfanne mit wenig Öl hell ausbraten

Brot in kleine Würfel schneiden und zu dem Dörrfleisch in die Pfanne geben und fertig
braten lassen.
Aus der Pfanne nehmen und darin etwas Sahne, saure Sahne oder Schmand erhitzen,
mit wenig Salz oder Fondor und Muskat würzen und zu den Knödeln servieren.

Dazu paßt: grüner Salat

Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation devised, in addition to some marvelous software, the GNU General Public License (GPL for short). Or the CopyLeft it is sometimes called.

It is quite a revolutionary document, using the "copyright" tool to to protect your right to use free software.

Unfortunately using copyright to protect free software is a lot like using a Jackal to guard the hens.

In fact, various inconveniences relating to this have resulted in modifications such as the LGPL (Library General Public License) and more recently the NPL (Netscape Public License)

I call these matters mere inconveniences, the real damage will occur when the Jackal's, (sorry, I mean lawyers), actually get to test the GPL in court for the first time.

"Sure, no problem." Gives you complete freedom. I mean it. Utterly complete. A bit of a joke really. You have complete freedom anyway.
"Don't worry, be happy." Apart from being good advice and a good song, it also says :- No matter what anyone else says or does, you still have complete freedom.
Now bugger off. The only way to get rid of pushy Jackals is to ignore them and not feed them. The GPL is just begging somebody to take it to court. Can't you just see it. Exactly the same thing that happened when some twit (not Linus) registered Linux as his own personal trademark. People got upset, started a fund, and hired, off all ruddy things, a Jackal to try and defend the chicken! Who really benefits from this trademark / patent / copyright thing anyway? The lawyers. Who made it up in the first place? The lawyers.

OK so the last part of the license sounds a bit harsh, but seriously folks, if you are a :-

Did I already mention, how great France is?!
So, no need to mention it - it's just great :)

After some not yet successful, but rather painful attempts to get into surfing (intentionally written without the "wind" - this sort is much easier to get started) in Mimizan, I've been a week in Biarritz - a nice town, if quite expensive, where I tried to continue my efforts in surfing, still without success, but had a nice time there, meeting Thomas, the christian surfer making his living from repairing surfboars in a garage in the rue de madrid in biarritz under the name "feder flex" (obviously no website), but having not so much luck with the room first(totally moulded bathroom in the Hotel Palacito - for 60€/night, with a mini-seat-bathtub is really fucked up!), the food in general(expensive but not really great - bar jean with coal-burnt eggs is to mention here as the worst I got), and the weather(either no waves, or hard rain, or both) - but still a nice experience.

Good things to mention is the nice surfshop tulousurf, the restaurant le passage(wow, what a great composition and taste!), not bad, but still pricey the Hotel "Bellevue" (large room with full bathtub, seeing the sea from the window, o.k. breakfast buffet, for 75 plus 10 breakfast), with very nice personell.

So, on the way to St Raphael, I had to drink a lot of wine and eat Fromage, Foie Gras, Jammonneau, Chorizo, with some rugby fans (Franck has a German mother) going to the match toulon/Paris in Toulon and now I'm here, in the center of cote Provence, hoping to get some dives at Ile d'or which was just recommended to me by my friend Klawitter.

What else to say? I'm really missing Maria, whishing I could've shared that holiday with her, I'm really eager trying surfing again - maybe at Phillippe's place, and I'm quite happy and looking forward for my self-employment which starts next week!

No photos yet, as fucking N95 finally gave up it's live without a reason (first phone that lived so short I ever had)...

Off to France...

I'm heading to France tomorrow.

After quitting my job with Silpion, in order to work on realizing some of my own ideas, and do some freelance work to fincance this, I decided that I need a holiday to get some fresh air into my head.
Eventually, I came up with the idea to learn a sport that always fascinated me since I noticed it: surfing (without the "wind", a.k.a. riding on waves).

I'm really excited about this, I really don't know if I will make this - it's really a tough sport, as far as I see, and also quite a bit dangerous, if you don't take care. But that's exactly what's so fascinating about it.
In addtion to that, I will go to this trip totally alone (although not the very first tome for me going on holiday alone, it's unusual to go without Maria), and I'll do mostly camping. Only for the last week, when I'll be visting Rene Mages, a friend from OpenSource stuff, and active FFII guy agains software patents.

Alright, let's go! :)

Hamburg - Restaurants - Italienisch & Pizza

Da ich gerade einen Eintrag hier mit sehr schlechter Bewertung gesehen habe, will ich auch hierzu etwas sagen:

Ich gebe zu, seit meinem ersten Besuch, der schon fast 10 Jahre her ist, hat das Restaurant etwas nachgelassen, im Vergleich zu meinem aktuellen Lieblings-Italiener Picoletto zum Beispiel.

Die individuelle Speisekarte, die es nicht in Druckform, sondern nur als Tafel gibt, wurde bei meinen ersten Besuchen immer noch von der Chefin selbst vorgelesen und erklärt, das Ambiente, und auch der süße Garten sind super-gemütlich.
Das Essen war immer hervorragend, der Preis adäquat, wenn auch etwas gehoben.

Punktabzug gibt es, weil bei den letzten Besuchen die Karte nicht mehr vorgelesen und erklärt wurde, und die Bedienung beim letzten Mal nicht sehr aufmerksam war.
Und wir bekamen, obwohl auch mehrgängig gespeist, im Gegensatz zu anderen auch keinen Abschiedsschnaps wie sonst üblich.
Ich tippe einfach auf Überlastung - hier scheint bei vollem Garten und Haus einfach eine Angestellte zu fehlen - die gute Chefin wird ja auch nicht jünger, und war bisher, als ich da war, immer allein zu Werke.
Trotzdem, bei gehobenem Preis darf das nicht vorkommen, daher zwei Punkte Abzug allein dafür.

Hamburg - Restaurants - Italienisch & Pizza

Ein Genuss - und dabei so gemütlich und lecker!

Jahrelang bin ich immer wieder an diesem Restaurant vorbeigegangen, und habe gedacht, was das wohl für ein Laden ist, so ungemütlich an einer befahrenen Straße gelegen.

Als ein Freund es mir einmal empfohlen hat, sind wir das erste mal hingegangen - und es war perfekt!
Natürlich gibt es zum günstigen Preis eine super Pizza-Auswahl, aber dazu jede Menge anderer italienischer Spezialitäten, und immer eine Tageskarte, die die super-freundliche Bedienung aus dem Kopf vorträgt.
Überhaupt ist neben der Qualität des Essens die Bedienung hervorragend - hier wartet man nicht lange, einen Wunsch von den Augen abgelesen zu bekommen, und es ist immer ein "Klönschnack" (was auch immer das auf italienisch heißen mag) dabei.

Besseres Essen, ein freundlicheres Ambiente, und eine aufmerksamere Bedienung kann man, meiner Meinung nach, lange suchen - und das zu einem mehr als fairen Preis!

regarding enterprise distribution security

At some points, I was wondering, if it really is that good to use only te free and community-built Debian distribution on my servers, because I've become sceptic with at least two issues: one was when Debian security updates were delayed because of lacking manpower, and the other was when it has been uncovered that there was a patch introduced in the changes of the Debian OpenSSL maintainer, that actually made the software produce insecure ssh keys.

So, at so me point I thought that "enterprise" distributions (doe it actually mean distributions made *for* and enterprise or *by* an enterprise?) might give better a better warranty to let such things not happen.

But, here's a proof and an actual case that things like that happen in those enterpeise distributions, too: Redhat hat an intruder in their network, who seemingly even managed to introduce malicious or changed code and signatures into the openssh package!
Doesn't really sound too promising, I guess. As well as the fcact, that the enterprise sponsored Ubuntu distribution was also hit by the Debian openssl-bug - so they don't really take do additional security reviews or whatever for their packages - mainly, they just take what debian gives them...

So, there's not much reason to go to an enterprise distribution, but probably technical ones, if they occur. Currently, I keep being happy with Ubuntu on my Laptop, but sticking with Debian on servers, even though I have to admit, that Redhat and Suse deliver some interesting technology parts, which I like to look at.
Ubuntu for Servers still sounds strange to me, and I don't see the reasoning behind that. I'd support and help customers who insist on using it like that, but when asked, I'd always recommend Debian as the dpkg-based distribution of choice when talking servers.

"Russicher Frieden"

Ganz ehrlich, natürlich überblicke ich nicht alle Hintergründe dessen, was dort in Georgien gerade abläuft (vielleicht wird die Veranstaltung Was ist los im Kaukasus? daran ja was ändern?) .

Trotzdem, zutiefst erschrocken war ich, als ich letzten Mittwoch in der NDR Sendung "Zapp" gesehen habe, wie russische Soldaten gezielt und massiv auf Journalisten schießen - und zwar nicht in Einzelfällen, sondern allein in dieser Sendung wurden 5 oder sechs solcher Fälle gezeigt!

Auch wird weiterhin, obwohl die Russen seit Tagen sagen, sie ziehen aus dem Gebiet ab, wir weiter über Kampfhandlungen und anderes berichtet.

Ich finde das alles sehr beängstigend! Können wir überhaupt was dagegen tun, dass das russische Militär macht was es will? Sind wir nicht schon völlig von deren fossilen Brennstoffen abhängig, mal abgesehen von der atomaren Bedrohung, die solch ein Staat darstellt?

Jedenfalls, das Wort "Russischer Frieden" wird gerade in unserem Haushalt ein geflügeltes - was es bedeutet, kann man sich leicht ausrechnen, wenn man sich diesen sogenannten Waffenstillstand anschaut...

Typing breaks - good for the back, and RSI

Typing breaks are no only good for RSI-prevention, but also, I feel much better in my back, actually didn't have any problems with it, since I do regular screen/typing breaks.

I have set the "Typing break" in the Gnome Keyboard preferences to pause for 4 minutes every 90 minutes. I just stand up from my chair, walk around a little, and go on working.
Sometimes I suspend the breaks multiple times because I want to keep going, but alltogether, I'm doing my breaks.

Über solche Dreistigkeit kann man sich einfach nur ärgern, als zahlender Kunde, der sich größte Mühe gibt, treu zu bleiben...

Hat man eigentlich als Bürger, als der man ja quasi Miteigentümer eines solchen Staats-Unternehmens ist, eine Möglichkeit, darauf Einfluss zu nehmen, wann dieser Mann endlich gefeuert wird?

Deutsche BAHN - no Bonus points for good customers

So,
I bought a Bahncard 100 from Deutsche Bahn AG - a Ticket with which you can ride most of their trains for free, for one year - for the price of around 3000 Euro.

The Bahn AG also has a Bonus program, where normally, Bahncard customers get 1 point for every Euro they pay. Last week I asked one of their representatives on the phone, why they forgot to give me points for my travel to France for around 266 Euro.
The counter-woman said: "Because you didn't get a Bahncard rebate on this travel to France".
Clearly - because I get no cheaper ticket, meaning, I pay MORE, I also get no bonus points as a thank you! You only get Bonus points if you pay LESS!!!
I also don't get any bonus points for the ticket I just bought for my sister to come to Hamburg.

When informed via mail about my (still unchanged ) bonus points account, I asked again to clarify this, and after some mails back and forth, I got the clear answer:
"Nach Überprüfung Ihrer Daten sind Sie im Besitz einer BahnCard 100. Sie können mit dieser BahnCard keine weiteren Punkte Sammeln. "

It means, once you spent 3000 Euros, you'll not get any further bonus points. No way.

Yeah, my beloved Bahn, Mr. Mehdorn - I know you'll tell me know, that this all is actually good for me, and like with every "price adjustment" that happens twice or trice a year, this is only for my own benefit - clearly!

But, you know what? I don't believe it! You don't get satisfied and happy customers by telling them, if you spend more than 3000 Euro on them, they eventually stop to give you bonus points for additional things you buy from them. This is not an incentive to stay your customer, it's an incentice to feel kicked in the ass by you and go away.

I wonder how long I'll keeping my ground rule top avoid flying as much as possible - traveling by train is made so hard for the passengers and customers - they kick you in the ass for being their customer, they make buying tickets and getting pricing information as difficult as possible(especially the latter is even iworse in France, Belgium and England, as far as my experience goes, but anyway) - I guess the railway companies just don't want us to be their customers...

They want to go public on the stock exchange, sell out everything they have, which comes from the state, and then go under, because they just cannot compete with the service and ease of air travel.

Open-OVF

In a Xen blog entry some days ago I just read about the Open-OVF Format initiative.

Would be cool to also include Virtualbox (or, if Sun would also implement support for such a format in virtualbox), as here it's still a major pain to package and distribute VM's for others - and there, on the desktop market, it is even much more important to make sharing easier than on the server.

For Xen I see, having support for such a format in the OpenSource version, an a nice and easy to use Desktop GUI, well working ACPI support - Xen could really get a grip on the Desktop/Workstation virtualization market...

I've just received my account for the Xen.org blog, and did my first posting, announcing Ganeti.

I know, in some posts on this personal blog here, I've been bashing Xen quite a bit, and I'll never stop criticizing stuff I don't like, anywhere.
But I'm still running Xen on quite some machines, and I still like the way some things work with this virtualization technology, so I will have some interesting remarks to do about it.
And the fact that there is a community manager, paid by Citrix, who really takes many of my rants very serious, and even hands me the key to the Xen.org blog, is quite a good sign to me.

PXE boot with KVM

While trying to boot KVM virtual machines via PXE, for testing of FAI on the developer workshop, I had some time to search for a solution to get this working.

It turned out, that the package maintainers remove the PXE boot images intentionally (to get rid of blobs):

The workaround: download KVM sources (from sourceforge, which seems totally broken today), build it, and copy the image to the kvm directory:

cp -a ./qemu/pc-bios/pxe-rtl8139.bin /usr/share/kvm/

You can then boot kvm with the option -boot n, and it tries to do an PXE boot.

Very interesting!

It sounded so interesting, I even clicked on a link on my own website (which google ads actually forbids - but hey, here I continue the ad for free!):

Download.com is financing google ads, as well as a nicely and professional designed download page

For nothing else but the Audacity Audio editing tool, available on many platforms, GPL licensed.
The difference seems to be that Download.com is selling support plans, to help people use the software.

Very interesting model, especially for such a consumer-grade software. (yes, I know, it has professional features, but such an ad looks more like "audio editing for everybody").
